On December 12, 2024, George Hylkema was recognized as *Skipper of the Year* by the Newport Mooring Association during the California Coastal Commission’s December meeting in Newport Beach. CCC Executive Director Dr. Kate Huckelbridge is seen here congratulating George on his award. Known for his dedication to the Newport Harbor community, George has made lasting contributions that benefit mooring permittees and the harbor at large.
One of George’s most beloved innovations is the shuttle dinghy concept, which has helped mooring permittees access their boats efficiently for over 15 years. Equally impressive is his invention of the Particle Separator, a critical device that protects our marine sanitation pumps by filtering out screws and small metal objects that can damage sensitive pump equipment. By preventing breakdowns and keeping these pumps operational, George's invention has played a significant role in maintaining Newport Harbor's water quality.
George’s ongoing generosity and innovative spirit make him a cornerstone of our harbor community, always ready to lend a helping hand. Congratulations, George, on this well-deserved honor!
